The location

An apartment in a historic canal house in the Amsterdam canal district. Behind the old facade the rooms are tall and deep, and the daylight arrives from two ends of the plan.

The design

The inspiration for this house comes from a warm and vibrant boutique hotel. The dark, rich blue combined with the black and brass details gives this house the luxurious atmosphere you normally only expect from high-end hotels.

The dining area features a visual border which was achieved with wood detailing that runs from the closet all the way across the ceiling and down the opposite wall. This creates a feeling of separate spaces without disrupting the spacious feel of the room.

The dark marble combined with the matt black finish makes the kitchen a real eye-catcher that truly pops against the contrasting light oak floor. The beautiful art, strikingly displayed throughout the apartment, gives this home the finishing touches it deserves.

Colours and materials

A luxurious colour palette and luxurious materials. The warm blue hues form a stunning backdrop for the expressive art. The light oak floor and brass details give it an airy and open feel. The furniture is finished in a dark velour, and the kitchen and bathrooms feature a beautiful dark marble.

In my own words

A private home can borrow from a hotel, but only so far. What makes a hotel room work, the depth of the colour, the brass, the drama, has to be weighed against the things you only need at home: somewhere to drop your keys, light to read by. Holding those two together was the whole project.
