VILLA DE DUINEN X LUMÉ
Boutique hotel and restaurant · Noordwijk aan Zee · Interior architecture, bespoke design and styling
The location
Five hundred metres from the sea, in the dunes of Noordwijk aan Zee, stands Boutique Hotel Villa de Duinen. Its restaurant, Lumé, is where this project began.
The owners asked for a thorough reworking. The restaurant had become a place for an eightieth birthday and a tenth anniversary — beautiful occasions, but planned ones. They wanted a younger guest, a lower threshold, and room for people who simply walk in.
The design
I designed three spaces that stand on their own and still move with one another through the day. In the original restaurant a bar and lounge was created, with a cocktail bar and low dining. The new extension, drawn by architect Van Maanen, became the restaurant. The terrace moved to the west side of the building: the same generous capacity, but larger in feel and more intimate in plan, with sun from morning until the last light.
Everything follows the light. The restaurant opens with the fresh light of early morning and carries breakfast, lunch and dinner. The bar and lounge belong to the golden hour. The terrace holds both.
The first thing we addressed was not the furniture. It was the acoustics. You cannot land in a room that keeps talking back to you. A home away from home only works when the room is quiet enough to let you arrive.
What began as an interior grew into the whole story: the storytelling, the tableware and table settings, the presence of the kitchen brigade, the colour scheme of the entire ground floor, the art and the styling.
Colours and materials
Sand, oatmeal and ivory, with warm greige as the base. Bouclé and linen on rounded seating, dark stained oak and fluted wood, pale stone floors and green-veined marble at the bar. Above the restaurant hang sculptural pleated ceiling pieces in amber silk; in the lounge, fringed pendants in brass.
Everything is bespoke: the cocktail bar, the service cabinets, the lighting, the furniture. The sliding doors in bronzed glass and steel are our own design. Living trees stand in the room in hand-thrown planters. The art was added last, and it is what makes the whole thing complete.
A home away from home.
In the words of the client
“What an extraordinary transformation Mariska Jagt has brought about at Boutique Hotel Villa de Duinen. Working with Bram van Mierlo and myself, Stefhan Raggers, a completely new experience was created from an empty canvas in only four months. From idea to realisation everything moved remarkably fast, professionally, and was worked out perfectly down to the smallest detail.
Together we rebranded our restaurant and lounge bar entirely into LUMÉ Bistro & Lounge Bar, and the end result genuinely exceeds all our expectations. A beautiful bar lounge was created, a stylish extension on the spot where the terrace used to be, and the outdoor terrace was successfully moved to the west side, with the same generous capacity as before.
What made the greatest impression is how carefully our wishes and ideas were listened to. Everything we had in mind has been translated into a stylish, warm and luxurious total concept that is entirely right. From atmosphere and routing to material choices and finish: every detail is carefully considered and perfectly executed.
Highly recommended for anyone looking for creativity, speed, professionalism and a stunning end result.”
